A segment is a group of contacts you create based on defined filters. Because segments are dynamic, they automatically update over time as soon as your contacts match the filters you've set, and contacts are also removed from segments when they no longer match your set filters
Segments are a great feature to use when creating automated sequences as they make it much simpler to deliver the right message to the right audience at the right time.
In this article, we'll go over how to create a segment from scratch.
For instance, to create a segment of contacts whose emails begin with ‘hello’, follow these steps:
- Click on the +Add filter button to open the filter dropdown.
- In this case, we want to filter contacts by their emails, so we would click the email attribute on the filter dropdown. This will provide you with a list of filter conditions.
- In this case, we want contacts whose emails start with ‘hello’. So, we would click the starts with the condition and enter ‘hello’ in the input field provided. This will then display only contacts that match the set filter condition.
- Next, click + Create segment button to create a segment with the set filter(s). This will open up the Create Segment modal.
- On the Create Segment modal, enter a name for the segment in the name field.
- Next, click on the Assign segment to a team or member dropdown and select a team or team member to assign the segment to.
- The new segment you’ve created will now appear in the Segment block on the sidebar.
To edit a segment's name:
- On the sidebar of your Contacts page, in the Segments section, select the segment you want to make edits to.
- On the selected segment's page, click on the Actions button at the top-right corner of the screen and select Edit segment from the Actions dropdown. This will open up the Edit segment model.
- Edit the segment name and click Save.
To delete a segment:
- On the sidebar of your Contacts page, in the Segments section, select the segment you want to delete.
- On the selected segment's page, click on the Actions button at the top-right corner of the screen and select Delete segment from the Actions dropdown.
- Confirm that you want the segment deleted by clicking Yes.
Now that you have created a segment, you can set up a one-time or recurring campaign that will go out to all the members of this segment. Campaigns are a great way to send marketing or promotional messages to a segment of your customers. You can also use campaigns to automate personalized welcome messages to first-time customers (belonging to the “New customers” segment) or say "thank you" to loyal customers who spend a certain amount over a specified time frame.
